MY KITTY FRIENDS

I have live around animals all of my life, especially CATS.  We had cats in our house growing up in Long Island in the 1940's  My Dad had cats at his garden store, so mice wouldn't eat the grass seed.  I remember two sister cats that lived at the store.  I named them SCRATCHY and MOUSYMousy had kittens and Scratchy help care for them.  I was only 10 at that time but I realized how amazing these creatures were. Once a large truck carrying chickens fell  over in front of the store.  What a sight!  Chickens all over the place.  Most got away.  The wrecker came and cleaned up the road.  The next morning we notice one young chicken had found its way to the front of the store.  We brought it in and for a year of more this bird enjoyed life at the garden center, playing with the cats and kittens and eating cat food.  During my high school years we obtained a gray angora cat I named Figero He was a beautiful long haired cat.  One day a year later I discovered a kitten in an old doll carriage in our basement.  We thought Figero had stolen it, but he did not.  It turned out that Figero was a SHE and was a wonderful mother.  Figero went on to give birth to one or two kitten each year.  We kept most of them of them.

Below is a picture of a cat I rescued from a laboratory where I had been working.  This cat was destined to be used for an experiment, but I talked the investigators in allowing me to keep him BIG RED ; was just Big and Red.  And as you can see, he had a special talent.  We took him with us when we moved to Vermont.

MAX

Our twenty years in Vermont brought much happiness and more cats, including MAX, who has a full page devoted to him.  Max lived in our house in Vermont with 4 other kitties, RUFUS, GUS, ALBIE Rufus Passed away in 1995 and Gus and Albie went to live at a farm.  1997 after Max died we bought a kitten locally and named him Charlemagne, Charlie for short.,  Charlie found a friend Sylvester the kitty from the house behind ours.  These two played every day until  in 1998 the arrival of a kitten Charlie found.  While our kids were visiting in June,  Ireen noticed that our cat, CHARLIE, been hanging around the garage all evening.   Ireen paid it no mind until late that evening she heard faint, high pitched meowing coming from the garage.  She looked around in the garage and found nothing.  She looked outside and again found nothing.  When she returned to the garage, she saw Charlie looking over toward her studio. Looking under a table, Ireen spied a tiny, gray kitten, about five or six-week’s old.  She woke up Dena and Tracy so they might see the visitor.  Attempts to catch the little critter were to no avail.  Ireen was even bitten during one attempt.  After feeding the kitten a few times Ireen put some food in our kitty cage and trapped the kitten, which turned out to be a girl.  It was apparent that Charlie had known the kitten was in the garage for some time.  Lenny believes that Charlie found the little one and brought her home.  We named the kitten Adeltrude,ADDIE”, after a daughter of the original Charlemagne.  We were concerned as to how Charlie would receive the newcomer.  Not to worry. Charlie has become Addie’s surrogate mother.  The two of them are virtually inseparable.  He dotes on her to an incredible extent, grooming her, playing with her and generally performing his maternal duties.   As the photo shows, it is something to see.  We spend quite a bit of time just watching them.  Now 10 years later, these two don't sleep together but Addie still looks to Charlie for affection.

In January 2002, our daughter moved in with her cat, LUCY, a 12 year old tabby.  Lucy hates other cats, and walks around the house growling and is DEFINATELY in charge.  All other cats get out of her way.  Lucy and her mother moved out in 2004, all other cats are happy and so is Lucy. Lucy loved the dryer.

In 2003 my friend's son found a kitten in a boat at a boat repair place. Of course she brought it to me, a black kitten we named Frodo. Frodo is just like the character from Lord of the Rings, he is not afraid of any one or anything.

In June 2004 our daughter  rescued 6 kittens and we kept one.SAM

SAMWISE The Brave

He spends his time chasing and playing with Frodo.  Now no more additions.  Lucy moved in with her mother and we have now 4 cats.

One year later almost to the day our daughter Dena found a single kitten in her car engine.  Just like last year when 6 kittens showed up.  Only one , a calico.  She has made herself quite comfortable at our house and although we expected to find her a home, as of Sept 2005 she is still here.  Sam loves her.  we named her Rose, "Rosie" for short. Rose is the girl in the story Lord of the Rings that at the end, marries Samwise.

2007 in April, my neighbor found a 3 week old kitten by the side of the road.  Of course she brought it to me.  It was so small  10 oz. we bottle fed him and several weeks later and about 8 weeks old, and after he bit off the end of the nipple, we trained him to eat regular cat food.  Once you have bottle fed a cat, he is yours, and so that is # 6 in our house.  We named him Pippin after the same Lord of the Rings story and he is just so loving, he sleeps and cuddles with us every night.  we love him.         Pippin learning toilet training, seems he won't do it unless the red insert in on the seat, we are hopeful though. We have no more room, so no more cats for our house, we hope.

SADLY, WE HEARD TODAY MAY, 3  2008. THAT SYLVESTER PASSED AWAY, WE WILL ALL MISS HIM

that's all folks, for now May 2008
