IREEN'S

BIOGRAPHY

I am from Mahopac, NY and went to art school in NYC. Married Lenny , and raised two wonderful children. We spent many years in Vermont and moved more recently to the beach in North Carolina.

I have been an artist for many years and recently have been producing monoprints and watercolors, specializing in whimsical works that feature cats.   I have artwork on display in the Carolina Artists’ Studio Gallery and. Orange Cat Studio in New Bern.

he name ”Dancing Cats” came from an idea I had while thinking of what to paint next.  One night, on the Dave Letterman show, Paul Newman stood up from a seat in the audience and shouted,

“WHERE THE HELL ARE THE DANCING CATS”?

I didn’t think much of that little phrase.  I knew he was referring to the Broadway show “CATS”.  However, the phrase stayed in my mind.  A few days later while thumbing through some of my art books, I came upon Matisse’s “La Danse”

At that moment my mind connected, Voila! “Dancing Cats”.  The painting received an honorable mention at the Carteret County “Art For The Heart” exhibition and took second place at the Carteret County Senior Games.  “Dancing Cats” was created using the oil monoprinting method,  and with a zinc plate.

MONOPRINTS

The monoprint is an intriguing hybrid of printmaking techniques.  It is neither a print nor a painting, but a combination of the two.  The method is aptly named because it is one, (Mono), image painted or drawn with oil paint, water paint or printers ink.  The image is painted on a flat plate and then transferred to dampened paper by pressing or rubbing the paper.  When the paper is removed the image remains on the paper in reverse.  This method is quite old, having first been used by printmakers in the 1500's.
